Scientific Approach to ‘OM’ Chanting Meditation

The whole world is going through pandemic out brake from many months now. Many systems of medicines are trying hard and all possible ways to find an ultimate remedy, but it’s becoming more and more mutant viruses each day. Ultimately vaccine is in force and frontline to give the final answer. The irony is, we are not safe until all of us are safe. During this time, many have adopted life style changes, accepted healthy food pattern, yoga, pranayama, herbal concoctions, Ayurveda therapies, immune boosters, multi vitamins, etc. we are doing everything to keep both physical and mental health balanced, healthy and happy. There are certain factors where stress and anxiety related to financial matters, health risks, Covid scare, loss of close members, distance from family members etc. Many are turning spirituality to battle mental stress.

Among many paths, Meditation is a fancy word, and few have adopted meditation as their daily routine. Some does not believe in it. There are many ways to practice meditation for example, mindfulness meditation, relaxing techniques, mantra chanting, concentration, Om chanting, etc. So here I have experienced, hence tried collecting some points from available scientific research done on ‘OM’ chanting by scholars, which i thought may be useful for all readers, on how ‘Om’ chanting or a type of meditation benefits our body to combat stress.

Om is a syllable which has no translation, it represents God / Higher energy / Ishwara or Brahman. It is the most powerful of all mantras.  It is considered to be cosmic sound, primordial sound and the totality of all sounds.

The entire psychological pressure and worldly thoughts are removed by chanting OM mantra.

OM consists of 3 fold experiences of man ie.. ‘AUM’, where A represents physical plane, level of gross, U represents Mental, astral plane and intelligent spirits ie at subtle level, M represents whole deep sleep state which is unknown in our wakeful state.

In all our ancient classics, Upanishads, yoga sutras, Bhagvatgeeta OM is explained as primordial sound or source of all other sound and creation.

Benefits on the human body: Many studies have been conducted to see the regular OM chanting effect on human body. It reduces heart beat and increases cutaneous peripheral vascular resistance and this can be understood as it is a sign of increased alertness even while being physiologically relaxed. It also decreases respiratory rates and skin resistance, this is subtle change in mental state. It synchronize and reinforce inherent cardiovascular rhythms and modify baroflex sensitivity. There is cognitive involvement and a combination of mental alertness with physiological rest during the practice of Om meditation. The study on Auditory evoked potentials showed increase in the peak amplitude of the Na (Sodium) wave and can be correlated to increase in the number of neurons recruited, this reflect changes at subcortical and primary auditory cortex levels and decreases the sensory transmission time at the neural levels.

It is not just the concentration of mind and repetition of any word gives you this benefit, but it is only OM chanting. Within the minutes mind and body begin to relax, negative thoughts are dramatically swept away to releasing this internal life force that heals the self on cellular level with more energy, strength and focus. It means that concentrating on Om mantra and continuously chanting it slowly shifts our attention. It is reflection of most fundamental interlocking process in our bodies. The harmony we play echoes the harmonic relationships of every vital system ie.. our heart beat, breathing, brain waves pulsing, neuronal firing, metabolism, enzymatic action, hormonal rhythms and behaviour, addictions, habits etc. It is a brain stabilizer, By practicing it one can enter deeper and deeper into the own natural state which is also an energy medicine for human under stress.

There is no particular method or time to practice this, however Brahmi muhurta (early morning before sun rise) is best for meditation. One can go for slow or fast chanting, initially with few numbers and increase to desired number or couple of minutes. One can alone chant or practice with the help of pre-recorded audios. Meditation is best with OM chanting and concentrating on one’s self inner potential. One who attains OM, merges with the absolute.

So practice this precious art of OM chanting meditation for a few minutes in a day and go for stress free life style and increase the quality of life… All the best…

This means that the century-old practice includes yoga postures (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayamas) and meditation. Through these, the body, mind and breath come in harmony with each other. The word yoga itself means "union"of the individual with the External intelligence. Though many people think of yoga only as physical exercises — the asanas or pos...
